Vishwakarma Puja, or Biswakarma Jayanti, or Viswakarma Puja is celebrated annually on September 17. Vishwakarma Puja is dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma the divine architect of the universe in Hinduism.
Lord Vishwakarma is known as the divine engineer since the Puranic age. As a mark of reverence he is not only worshipped by the engineering community but also by all professionals. This festival is celebrated in the month of September. On this day all the workers in the workshops and offices worship their tools and instruments in front of Lord Viswakarma, which are generally used in their profession.
This is the puja of Lord Vishwakarma, the main architect of the universe who had fabricated the universe as per the direction of Brahma, the lord of creation.
Viswakarma Puja is celebrated by all industiral houses, artists, craftsman and weavers. The festival is observed on the Kanya Sankranti Day (September) which follows the Ganesh Puja.
Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated on September 17 in Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura and other parts of Eastern India. Majority of the Hindu festivals are not celebrated on a constant date because most auspicious days and festivals depend on the lunar calendar and on tithi – lunar day, which changes annually. But majority of times Vishwakarma puja falls on September 17 (very rarely it might vary by a day).
This is because Vishwakarma Puja day is calculated based on the transit of the sun. The two major schools of almanacs followed in Bengali are the he Suryasiddhanta and Bisuddhasiddhanta. Both subscribe to the same view.
All over the country factories, workshops and manufacturing units are in festive mood. Shop spaces are cleared to make way for the deity. The Lord on the back of his appurtenance (bahana), the elephant, holds in his four hands, a water-pot, the Vedas, a noose and craftsman’s tools.
The rituals are followed by the distribution of “prasad”. The yearly feast is cooked, where the workmen and the owners lunch together. Throughout the day colourful kites are flown. The sky fills up with all shades and colours. Chadials, Mombattis, Chowrangees, Petkattas, Mayurpankhis, Baggas fly high to establish the skills of the fliers. The sky becomes a war zone with the discarded kites dropping every now and then with the cry of “Bho-Kattaaa” from the distant roofs or parks.
Vishwakarma puja is an inspiration for many to create new products and increase productivity for the working class. The workers at many places make resolutions to perform better from this auspicious day.
